Weekly United Way Radio Show on K-TOR The Tornado!
On Friday, January 13, Ball High School launched Galveston’s newest radio station, KTOR – The Tornado! The station is led exclusively by the students in the Media Arts and Digital Technology Community at Ball High under direction and management of Mike Dudas. KTOR – The Tornado will be playing a mix of rock, pop, adult contemporary and select oldies hits.
The station will also include a weekly United Way show, which will be Co-hosted by Lindsey White, United Way of Galveston Executive Director, and Ball High’s Mike Dudas! Each week, the United Way on K-TOR Show will highlight a different United Way Partner Agency, giving listeners a chance to dive deep and get involved with the greatest organizations in our community. Tune in every Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 – 11:00 to listen to our latest show!
Besides expanding the Media Arts program and offering students additional hands-on experience, The Tornado also provides a much-needed connection with events, news, and information happening across Galveston Island.
Since KTOR – The Tornado’s inception in early 2016, the program has grown tremendously. Mike Dudas, Sponsor of the Media Arts Program at Ball High, stated “We started broadcasting one hour per week on MyBayArea Radio in September. As the community started listening and we realized the potential that we had in Galveston, a lot of our students wanted to be on the station. This transition has just been natural and we are thrilled to offer this opportunity to the entire Media Arts program at Ball High!”
The Tornado is already off to a great start with a content partnership with the The Galveston County News. K-TOR show hosts and reporters will produce hourly news segments based on the headlines from Galveston County Daily News. These same segments will be broadcast on MyBayArea Radio as well throughout the day.
Dudas said “This program couldn’t have been successful without our community partners. We have been blessed to have partnered with several organizations that have made this a possibility!” Community Partners are MyBayArea Radio, The Galveston County News, The Galveston Island Humane Society, United Way of Galveston and The Galveston Park Board. Nate Stockard, General Manager of MyBayArea Radio, noted “The students at Ball High have been remarkable to work with. We are elated to have partnered with them to make The Tornado possible.”
