Celebrating our United Way Stars
On Thursday, February 9, the United Way of Galveston hosted an event to honor our Corporate Partners for making the 2016-2017 Fundraising Campaign a roaring success. We literally rolled out the red carpet to celebrate our United Way Stars! This was our opportunity to say thank you to the businesses and employees that worked so hard to raise funds for the United Way’s 24 Partner Agencies!
During the fall of 2016, the United Way held our annual Pledge Drive to promote employee giving in 2017. Generous employees from over 40 local businesses pledged to donate over the course of the entire year through payroll deduction. The United Way presented honors and awards to the businesses and volunteers that worked tirelessly to ensure that local nonprofits will receive additional funding in 2017. The event also served as the United Way of Galveston’s 94th Annual Meeting. This celebration was generously underwritten by AMOCO Federal Credit Union with support from Moody Gardens.

Rising Star Awards
Rising stars grow quickly. They quickly become successful. They are innovative and competitive. We need our rising stars. We need bright and fiery groups who are not afraid to try new things and step out on a limb for United Way! We thank you all!!!
Rising Star Award: Galveston Independent School District Employees Mrs. Polzin led the GISD Campaign Team this year, working closely with Mary Patrick and Julie Schmid, United Way of Galveston Board Members, and also with Erin Yarbrough, Executive Director of the GISD Educational Foundation to grow their campaign by almost 200 percent! They almost doubled their campaign in just one year! This would not have been possible without this Dream Team and their commitment to United Way!
Rising Star Award: Transitional Learning Center Employees and Tideway Employees This year, TLC made it a point to give every single employee a good reason to support United Way by having United Way Agencies speak at all of their staff meetings. Brian Hayes, the Director at Tideway, made it easy for his employees to give. He told them he would guarantee overtime to them to help them afford to make a fair share gift to United Way! Guess what happened because of that? They grew their contributions by 325%!!!
Rising Star Award: Employees of Kroger in Galveston. Deidra has managed the United Way Campaign for other stores and when she took on the Galveston store this year, she told us that she breaks records every single time she manages a campaign. You can imagine how elated we were when when we heard this! Deirdre certainly put her money where her mouth is. The Kroger employee giving campaign grew 600%!!! It is safe to say that Deirdre has not broken her streak of breaking records with every campaign she manages!
Rising Star Award: City of Galveston Employees The City of Galveston literally pulled out all of the stops. They started with a Proclamation from City Council in Support of United Way. Then they hosted a lunch for every single City Employee to learn more about United Way. The support of this Campaign started at the very top with Mayor Yarbrough, City Council, and Brian Maxwell, and it kept spreading. Kent Etienne, City of Galveston HR Director, led the Committee with lots of support from Public Information Officer Jaree Heffner. They hosted several planning meetings with the Committee to ensure the success of the United Way Campaign. We were invited to speak at Department Head Meetings to introduce the coming Campaign to Managers that would take it to their teams. The Communications Team made a Video about United Way and have played it on Channel 16 countless times. The City of Galveston Employees were poster children for United Way. They literally did everything you can do to support us. They gave to United Way. They advocated at all levels for United Way. And they volunteered for United Way. We thank every single person on your committee and each of the generous employees from the City who gave and grew this campaign by 485%!!!
Our next group of awards will go to the businesses and organizations that are legendary. They are very well known for supporting United Way and their history of employee giving has already reached superstar status.
United Way Legend Award: Rosenberg Library Employees The Rosenberg Library has offered more than a century of community service to our area. They represent Galveston’s past, present and future, and we couldn’t be more thankful that our partnership with the Rosenberg Library spans the past, present and future!
United Way Legend Award: Industrial Materials Corporation Harold Levy founded the company back in 1958 and they have been supporting United Way for as long of any of us can remember. We can always count on IMC, Jason Levy, Wesley Logan, Hortencia Barragon and their generous employees to be right by our side!
United Way Legend Award: Texas First Bank Being a True Texas Community Bank, Texas First Bank supports local charities and organizations that are important to the communities that they serve. Texas First Bank founder Charles T. Doyle continues to support the United Way of Galveston each year, and we appreciate the example that his values have set for the generous employees at Texas First Bank. We also appreciate the hard work of Dyan Harden who champions this campaign for us each year!
United Way Legend Award: Galveston College Galveston College is a beacon of light guiding lifelong learning. Join us in thanking Galveston College not just for their generosity in our Campaign, but also for their 50 years of service to our island. We are so thankful for the opportunity that every student who enters their doors is granted by selecting the best Community College in Texas!
United Way Legend Award: The Galveston County Daily News Many of you attended our Campaign Kick-off Luncheon last August, where Daily News President and Publisher Leonard Woolsey inspired us all when he shared his personal journey with United Way. Not only can we all count on the Daily News to provide each of us with real news, in real time, we can also count on the Daily News and their employees to generously support our community. They have always been steadfast in their support of United Way and we extend our gratitude to them for what they do for our community!
United Way Legend Award goes to Moody Gardens Each year, Moody Gardens pulls out all the stops to host a breakfast for all employees to attend. It is during this breakfast that the United Way Campaign is announced, and employees are educated about the importance of the United Way. This year, HR Director David Henley invited us to bring along 3 of our Partner Agencies to share their stories with the crowd. The generosity of Moody Gardens Employees through the United Way campaign says a lot about the culture that has been cultivated by their leadership. We also extend our gratitude to every single person on the Moody Gardens team that was a part of making this evening so special. Special shout to our Catering Director Patty and her team for always going out of their way to make our events fabulous!
United Way Legend Award goes to Texas A&M University Galveston Campus A&M has a strong campaign team that hustles hard each year, but they hustled even harder this year. They raised their goal to $25,000 and by golly, they didn’t rest until they had exceeded it! In addition to the promoting the SECC pledge drive at every possible opportunity, A&M got creative! They invited local charities to the Agency Fair. They also had some special events to raise funds: they sold gorgeous, fragrant roses and then they had a fantastic silent auction with all sorts of treats and treasures for the highest bidders. How about a big whoop for Texas A&M Galveston Campus!
United Way Legend Award: University of Texas Medical Branch We have never seen a campaign team come together like the UTMB SECC Team! Last year, they went out and raised $542,000. Well, that’s a lot of money. But UTMB wondered (see what we did there) – what if we try to do more? So they did. The Campaign Team was assembled, with Dr. Graham at the helm. Dr. Callender hosted a breakfast and challenged the room full of Ambassadors to get their departments engaged and excited. Pep Valdez and the Marketing Team created the most adorable Zombie ads we have ever seen! And then history was made. UTMB raised $590,000 for the SECC! Folks, this is what legends are made of.
Thank you to our Corporate Donors and Foundations
We are so grateful for the Foundations and Businesses that also give to United Way of Galveston!
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work Award
This award honors the energetic and dedicated Campaign Team at HomeTown Bank! They work together way ahead of the campaign as a team to strategize, and then they hit the road. The HomeTown Bank Campaign Team visited every single branch to let their employees know that the campaign was coming, how it would work, what the daily themes would be, and what kind of prizes they could win. They even invited a handful of our Partner Agencies to join in the tour and spread their message.
Their daily themes were also conversation starters with non-employees. Employees, including the tellers, were all dressed up every day of the Campaign, so every day at every branch they were creating opportunities to talk to the community about the United Way. They were loud and proud in their support of United Way!
We have never seen a group of people have more fun raising money for charitable causes. They literally put the FUN into Fundraising!
Thank you to the Campaign Team at Hometown Bank, thank you to all of your dedicated Employees, and thank you to Jimmy Rasmussen for creating this culture where giving to the United Way is a fun and important part of being on the team!
Spirit of Galveston Award
You simply cannot turn around without seeing Moody National Bank doing something great for Galveston!
The Spirit of Galveston Award recognizes a company that embodies everything that makes our island a wonderful and special place. It starts with the deep-rooted sense of community involvement that so many of us share, wanting to volunteer and give back is something that really stands out about Galveston.
Our Spirit of Galveston Award goes to the company that you see giving back all the time, in all ways. They host drives for school supplies for less fortunate children to make sure they have the tools they need to succeed in school. They have also done coat and blanket drives to spread warmth. They hosted an awesome event called “Love You Blue” to honor local law enforcement.
There are many employees of Moody National Bank who serve on Boards of nonprofits that are helping those in need in Galveston. We know that Board work sometimes happens during business hours. It’s so wonderful that there is a culture of corporate philanthropy that runs so deep and true at Moody Bank that employees can do this. But they also put their money where their mouth is at Moody Bank. We have yet to go to a nonprofit fundraiser where Moody National Bank did not buy a table or sponsor in some way.
United Way would not be here without Moody National Bank. Mr. Pierson, who has formerly served on our Board himself, goes way above and beyond in encouraging Moody Bank Employees to give to United Way. The company actually rewards Leadership Givers and Fair Share givers in many ways. We are thankful for you, Mr. Pierson. We are thankful to Nori Mejia, who did a wonderful job managing the campaign this year. And, we are thankful to each and every one of the employees of Moody National Bank for their generosity to United Way and to our community!
Like we said, you really can’t turn around without seeing Moody Bank doing something to make Galveston great.
