Contest Categories
A successful entry will capture community members wearing a “Live United” t-shirt and participating in activities relating to one or more of our three focus areas:
- EDUCATION Helping children and youth achieve their full potential
- Improving access to quality, affordable child care and early learning opportunities
- Partnering with schools and parents to improve graduation rates
- Providing after-school and mentoring programs for at-risk youth
- HEALTH Improving people’s physical and mental health
- Reducing substance abuse, child abuse and domestic violence
- Providing access to nutritional food
- Increasing access to critical mental and physical healthcare services and preventative care
- Providing skilled, quality care for senior citizens or individuals with developmental disabilities
- Providing disaster relief and/or emergency preparedness services
- FINANCIAL STABILITY Helping families become financially stable and independent
- Supporting basic needs while increasing financial education
- Helping hardworking people obtain job training and family-sustaining wages
- Connecting people to the resources they need
Prizes
The first, second, and third place winning images, along with the respective photographers name, from each of the three categories — plus the Facebook “fan favorite” — will be featured as part of the “Live United Community” Gallery.
Images may also be used for United Way of Galveston campaign materials, posters, website, social media, etc.
In each category, first place winners will receive a $35 gift card and second place winners will receive a $20 gift card. Additionally, every winner will receive a Live United gift package, available for pickup at the United Way office.
Rules and Regulations
Terms
United Way of Galveston’s “This is How I Live United” Photo Contest runs now through June 30, 2017. Contestants submitting entries agree to the rules of the contest. Contestants 18 or younger must provide a signed consent form from a parent or guardian to be eligible for entry.
Who may Enter
Photographers of any age who are residents of of Galveston, Texas may enter. United Way staff, board members, and their immediate families may submit photographs for use by United Way of Galveston, under the contest rules, but are not eligible to win a prize.
Entry Fees
None. Live United t-shirts are available at the United Way office (2200 Market St., Suite 850, Galveston, TX 77550)
How to Enter
Please submit digital photographs and requested information via online no later than June 30, 2017.
You are welcome to submit multiple entries but a separate entry form must be completed for each photo.
Include your name in the file name (ex: janedoe1.jpg). Digital photographs should be taken at the highest possible resolution. Files submitted should not be larger than 10240K (10Mb) and must be in JPEG or PNG format, with a resolution of at least 300 DPI (dots per inch). Winning images will be enlarged to 16” x 20”, so should be a minimum of 2240 x 1680 pixels (4 megapixels).
Photo Release
By entering the contest, entrants grant United Way of Galveston, Inc., and their designees a royalty-free, worldwide perpetual, non-exclusive right to use, reproduce, edit, display, transmit, prepare derivative works of, modify, publish and otherwise make use of the submitted photo or other information in any and all media (including, but not limited to, print, web, video, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other media channels), whether now known or hereinafter created, throughout the world and for any purpose. In addition to other things, the rights granted to United Way of Galveston include, but are not limited to, the right to resize, crop, censor, compress, edit, feature, caption, affix logos to, and to otherwise alter or make use of the submitted photo.
United Way of Galveston reserves the right to disqualify any image. You acknowledge and agree that United Way of Galveston shall have no obligation to post, display, or otherwise make publicly available any photo or information submitted by you, and may, in its sole and unfettered discretion, remove, edit, modify, or delete any photo or information submitted.
By submitting any photo or information to United Way of Galveston, you hereby waive any privacy expectations that you may have with respect to any such photo or information submitted by you. You also guarantee that you are the photographer and copyright holder of this photo submission.
Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit as feasible. United Way of Galveston will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses.
Model Release
For a photo in which a person is recognizable, the entrant must have secured a model release from each subject person, or, in the case of a minor, the subject’s parent or guardian. By submitting a photo, the entrant agrees that you have obtained all necessary photo releases and will provide them to United Way of Galveston upon request. By entering, participants agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless United Way of Galveston, its respective subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, employees, attorneys, agents, and representatives, from any and all third party liability for any injuries, loss, claim, action, demand, or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with the competition including, without limitation, any third party claim for copyright infringement or a violation of an individual’s right to privacy and/or publicity right.
Winners
First, second, and third place winners will be selected for each category (Health, Education, Financial Stability). A fan-favorite will also be chosen based on the number of “likes” it receives on our Facebook page. All decisions by the judges will be final. Winners will be notified as soon as possible after August 1, 2017.
Judging
Entries will be judged on the basis of creativity, photographic quality, and the effectiveness of conveying the Live United spirit in each category. All entries should include the words “Live United” in a highly visible form. A panel of United Way staff, board, and volunteer design professionals will judge the entries. All contest decisions are final.
Prizes

First and second place winners and the “fan favorite” will receive a gift card. Additionally, every winner will receive a Live United gift package, available for pickup at the gallery opening reception or from the United Way office.

Image Modifications:
Minor digital enhancement is permitted, but images that have been significantly modified or appear unnatural will be disqualified.
Not Permitted:
- No borders or frames may be added to images.
- No watermarks, signatures, or copyright notices may be added to images. All winning images will be displayed with the photographer’s name as feasible.
- Adding or replacing elements in an image.
- Using artistic filters.
Permitted Modifications:
- Images may be cropped and rotated as necessary as long as the rectangular format is maintained and the size is within the specifications above.
- Images may be resized as long as the aspect ratio is maintained
- Red-eye removal and spot editing
- One-step enhancement (such as “AutoFix”, “QuickFix”, “Auto Levels”, etc.)
- Use of filters to sharpen, soften, blur, despeckle, or remove noise.
- Use of corrective functions to improve the natural appearance of the image, such as levels, contrast, brightness, curves, intensity, tone, hue, saturation, lightness, value, color balance, and tint.
United Way reserves the right to alter any rules of this contest at any time.
