2-1-1 Day in Galveston
Why it matters and how we are celebrating
Every day, people in Galveston face moments when they need help navigating food access, housing stability, utility assistance, health care, or mental health support. In those moments, knowing where to turn can make the difference between a temporary setback and a full-blown crisis.
That is why 2-1-1 exists.
2-1-1 is a free, confidential service that connects people to essential community resources. By dialing 2-1-1, texting 2-1-1, or searching online, individuals can reach trained specialists who help them find accurate, up-to-date information about services available in our region.
February 11 is recognized nationally as 2-1-1 Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about this critical community lifeline.
This 2-1-1 Day awareness effort was recently featured in the Galveston County Daily News, highlighting the importance of 2-1-1 as a trusted community resource and our partnership with a local small business to spread the word. Read the Article
Why United Way of Galveston is focusing on 2-1-1
United Way of Galveston plays a unique role in strengthening the 2-1-1 network locally.
Beyond raising awareness for the public, we work behind the scenes to ensure that nonprofit service providers across Galveston are connected to 2-1-1 and that their information is current and accurate. This helps ensure that when someone reaches out for help, they are connected quickly to the right organization with the right services.
One of the most important reasons we invest in 2-1-1 is simple: it gives our community a shared, trusted answer to the question, “Where should I send someone for help?”
We often describe 2-1-1 as the community’s front door to help. When that front door is well-maintained, everyone benefits.
Who 2-1-1 is especially useful for
2-1-1 is designed for anyone who needs help, but it is also a powerful tool for people who are often asked to help others.
This includes:
- Employers and HR professionals supporting employees through life challenges
- Teachers, school staff, and counselors assisting students and families
- Faith leaders and volunteers responding to community needs
- Board members and community leaders looking for a reliable referral option
- Neighbors, friends, and family members who want to help but do not know where to start
In these moments, 2-1-1 provides a responsible, informed, and compassionate referral that does not place the burden of problem-solving on any one individual.
How we are celebrating 2-1-1 Day this year
This year, we are celebrating 2-1-1 Day in a simple, visible, and community-centered way.
On February 11, MOD Coffeehouse will use United Way of Galveston 2-1-1 branded sleeves on beverages throughout the day. Each sleeve is a small reminder that help is just three digits away.
This approach allows us to raise awareness outside of a traditional fundraising campaign while partnering with a locally owned small business that believes in strengthening our community.

We will be sharing photos and stories throughout the day on social media to highlight 2-1-1 and why it matters for Galveston. The effort was also highlighted by the Galveston County Daily News, helping extend awareness of 2-1-1 beyond our own networks.
How you can help spread the word
You do not have to work in social services to support 2-1-1.
One of the most powerful ways to use 2-1-1 is simply knowing it exists and sharing it when someone asks for help that feels bigger than what you can personally solve.
You can:
- Keep 2-1-1 in mind as a go-to resource when someone does not know where to start
- Share our 2-1-1 Day posts on social media to help raise awareness
- Let friends, family, or colleagues know that 2-1-1 is a reliable first step for finding local support
Sometimes the most helpful thing you can offer is not the answer, but a trusted place to turn.
When to use 2-1-1
2-1-1 can help connect people to resources related to:
- Food and nutrition
- Housing and homelessness prevention
- Utility and rental assistance
- Health care and mental health services
- Disaster recovery and emergency support
- Support for seniors, veterans, and families
If you or someone you know needs help, dialing 2-1-1 is a strong first step.
